When it becomes possible to program decision-making for machines based on moral principles, what will prevail: self-interest or the public welfare?
In a series of studies, Bonnefon et al. found that while participants approve stand-alone vehicles that can sacrifice passengers to save others, they prefer not to ride in such vehicles.
Respondents also would not approve self-sacrificing regulations, and such regulations would make them less willing to buy a self-driving vehicle.
